Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Electoral transparency is a cornerstone of democratic governance, ensuring free, fair, and credible elections. Local newspapers have historically played a pivotal role in promoting electoral transparency by providing accurate information, monitoring electoral processes, and holding stakeholders accountable. In Ilorin West Local Government, Kwara State, local newspapers serve as a platform for educating voters, highlighting irregularities, and fostering civic engagement (Abdulkareem & Musa, 2024). They contribute to transparency by covering campaigns, reporting on electoral processes, and exposing corruption or malpractice. Studies suggest that an informed electorate is critical for democratic participation, and local newspapers bridge the gap between citizens and electoral bodies (Ojo & Ahmed, 2023). However, challenges such as media bias, limited funding, and political interference may hinder their effectiveness. This study investigates the role of local newspapers in promoting electoral transparency in Ilorin West, exploring their contributions and challenges.
